People’s Union for Democratic Rights

A civil liberties and democratic rights organisation based in Delhi, India

In the Palamu and Gumla districts of Jharkhand (erstwhile Bihar), tens of thousands of people successfully prevented the army from conducting field firing and artillery practice on their land in 1994. Later on, the plan for making the entire area into a firing range was scrapped. PUDR sent a fact-finding team that toured the area from 22 June to 26 June 1994 and met officials such as BDO, Circle officer, Divisional Commissioner Spokesperson of the Artillery Batallion. The team also met a large number of people from the affected villages as well as representatives of organisations leading the struggle. This is the story of tribal people’s struggle against displacement.
