People’s Union for Democratic Rights

A civil liberties and democratic rights organisation based in Delhi, India

An event of great political and historical significance occurred on 11 February 2011 inside the dense forests of Abujhmad in Chhattisgarh with the CPI (Maoist) releasing five policemen of the Chhattisgarh police force, abducted by them on 25 January 2011, before a committee of human rights activists and select members of of the media. The importance of the event was that the Maoists were releasing the policemen unconditionally. Equally significant was the fact that the Maoists were responding positively to a demand made by human rights groups from across India who questioned the politics of abduction and demanded the release of the policemen-hostages.
