Sir

On 23rd November, 2015; at least five workers were grievously injured on account of a fire which broke out on the upper floor of the four storeyed leather/ garment unit of M/s Fashion Global Limited located on Plot number 42 of Udyog Vihar, Sector 18, Phase IV, Gurgaon, Haryana.

A three member team from our organisation went to the area on the 25th of November. Although some of the workers talked about bursting of a boiler in the building, Mr. Rakesh Singh Parmar, a representative of the management categorically denied the existence of a boiler in the factory. Mr. Parmar told the team that the cause of the fire had not been ascertained but he hinted that it could have been triggered by the lighting of a bidi or electric short circuit. He also claimed that the one of workers was injured when he opened the door of the top floor from outside; however Mr. Parmar had no answer to how, more than one worker had been injured.

The present accident is merely the latest in a long list of frequent accidents which take place in the industrial belt of Udyog Vihar. Merely, five months back, a worker had been grievously hurt due to electrocution in a unit of Orient Craft Limited. The industry has a notorious record of accidents which are largely the result of non-usage of safety measures. This is related to machine-like pace which the workers are required to maintain and also to the cost-cutting measures by the employers.

In light of the above, we would request you to conduct an enquiry into the cause of present accident and also ensure proper compensation for the injured workers. Additionally, we demand that you conduct a survey of frequent accidents and also see if they are in violation of the Factories Act 1948 and other applicable laws and take measures to stop the same.
Thank you
