Of Human Bondage: An Account of Hostage Taking in Bastar

An event of great political and historical significance occurred on 11 February 2011 inside the dense forests of Abujhmad in Chhattisgarh with the CPI (Maoist) releasing five policemen of Chhattisgarh police force, abducted by them on 25 January 2011, before a committee of human rights activists and slect members of of the media. The importance of the event was that the Maoists were releasing the policemen unconditionally. Equally significant was the fact that the Maoists were responding positively to a demand made by human rights groups from across India who questioned the politics of abduction and demanded the release of the policemen-hostages.

Chintalnar Massacre Report

 Report of 13 member fact finding team of Coordination of Democratic Rights Organisations who visited the Chintalnar Area of Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh to probe into the incidents of atrocities perpetrated by the Salwa Judum and the state forces on the adivasis living in this area between 11th and 16th of March 2011.

जिंदगियों की कीमत

छत्तीसगढ़ में अबूझमाड़ के घने जंगलों के भीतर ११ फरवरी २०११ को बहुत गहरे राजनीतिक और ऐतिहासिक घटना घटी. इस दिन सीपीआई (माओवादी) ने मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ताओं और मीडिया के चुनिंदा सदस्यों के सामने छत्तीसगढ़ पुलिस के पांच जवानों को रिहा किया. सीपीआई (माओवादी) २५ जनवरी २०११ को इन पुलिसवालों का अपहरण किया था. यह घटना महवपूर्ण है क्योंकि माओवादियों ने पुलिसवालों को बिना शर्त रिहा किया था. यह बात भी महत्वपूर्ण है कि माओवादियों ने पुरे देश के मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ताओं कि मांगो पर सकारात्मक कदम उठाया.

Shocking Callousness and Neglect: A report on industrial accident and its aftermath

Thirteen workers were burnt to death in a factory in south Delhi’s Tuglaqabad area on 25 January 2011. However, six months after the event, as this report goes to press, little has been done to compensate workers, leave alone arrest those responsible for these deaths. This short report is a looks at the systemic inequalities that govern the lives (and deaths) of millions of dispossessed workers and the hugely unjust structure of the informal labour market in globalizing India.

Beyond the Prison Gates: A Report on Living Conditions in Tihar Jail

This is a small report on prison life in Tihar, to bring home facts about a world and its people completely invisible to the outside world. PUDR’s repeated request to jail authorities seeking permission to undertake formal visits to the jail was rejected and thus the present report is largely based on published accounts of prison life, court judgments and also some interviews with ex-detainees and families of those visiting the jail for mulaqat (visit) on a regular basis.

बेमानी जिंदगियाँ: एक ओद्योगिक दुर्घटना और उसके बाद के घटनाक्रम

२६ जनवरी २०११ को दक्षिण दिल्ली के तुगलकाबाद क्षेत्र में स्थित एक फेक्टरी में आग लगने से १३ मजदूरों की मौत हो गयी और ५-६ मजदूर गंभीर रूप से घायल हो गए. लभग ७ महीनों तक बाद भी मजदूरों के परिवारों को मुआवजा दिए जाने या इन मजदूरों की मौत के लिए जिम्मेवार लोगों के खिलाफ कार्यवाही के नाम पर कुछ खास नहीं हुआ है. प्रस्तुत छोटी रिपोर्ट उस सर्वव्याप्त गैरबराबरी के सम्बन्ध में है जो करोड़ों मजदूरों की जिंदगियों (और मौत) को नियंत्रित करती है. साथ ही यह रिपोर्ट वैश्वीकरण के इस दौर में अनौपचारिक छेत्र के मजदूर बाज़ार के अन्यायी ढांचे के सम्बन्ध में है.

PEOPLE’S CONVENTION FOR THE RELEASE OF THE PEOPLE’S ARTIST JITAN MARANDI

It was a long-awaited gathering. About five months had passed since the conviction of Jitan Marandi and three others, all poor peasants from adivasi, dalit and downtrodden socio-economic backgrounds by the District and Sessions Court at Giridih, Jharkhand. Jitan himself had been incarcerated for about 3 years and 8 months, accused in various cases, including the one filed in the wake of the Chilkhari firing of October 26, 2007 in the Giridih district. This is the report on the Public Convention against the death penalty to Jiten Marandi and others held in Ranchi on 12th November 2011

A STORY OF ‘SUICIDE’ AND SURVIVAL: Death in the custody of Vijay Vihar Police Station

The newspapers on the 3rd of November 2010 reported a death in the premises of Vijay Vihar P.S. of a 25 year old youth named Vikas. These reports suggested that Vikas had an affair with a woman married to another man. On that specific day Vikas called up police assistance at 100 after he entered into a fight with the husband of the women he reportedly loved. Thereafter Vikas committed suicide inside the police station where he was kept. PUDR‟s team investigated this death.
