PUDR strongly condemns the police action on the peaceful anti-dam protestors in Lakhimpur district of Assam on 11 May 2012. These protestors, who were sitting in the camp, are peacefully demonstrating against the upcoming big dam on river Subansiri, which is considered as the life line for the people living in the downstream areas of upper Assam. The protestors had put a blockade camp to obstruct the transportation of the construction materials to the dam site.  The blockade has been organised jointly by more than 9 organisations since November 2011.

Peoples Union for Democratic Rights is outraged at the brazen claim advanced by the Indian Army that let alone sanction for prosecution, no civil administration can even register a FIR against army personnel without sanction of the Central government. People’s Union for Democratic Rights strongly condemns the midnight crackdown on thousands of people staging a ‘Satyagraha’ and hunger strike at Ramlila Maidan with Baba Ramdev for demands related to corruption and black money.

The attack on the protesters was absolutely unwarranted as the ‘satyagraha’ was neither causing any law and order problems nor was it disrupting the peace of the city in any manner. Independent of the nature of the politics they may espouse, individuals and organizations have right to stage peaceful protest.
